Bird Dog Development

Built for the uplands. Developed with purpose.

Pointing Breed Training

It takes patience, finesse, consistency, proper introductions and exposures.  At Annapolis Pointing Dog Company we develop pointing dog breeds for serious upland work, producing dogs that are valued for their capability in the field and companionship in the home.

  • We work primarily with English and Continental pointing breed dogs intended for upland hunting.

Training progresses in stages and is tailored to each dog’s maturity and temperament.

we specialize in preparing dogs for their first seasons hunting wild game birds.

    • Introduction to birds through controlled pigeon work

    • Steady exposure to wild birds in season

    • Field handling and range management

    • Conditioning and endurance building

    • Steadiness and bird manners

    • Proper introduction to gunfire

    • Environmental confidence across varied terrain

Dogs are developed progressively — never rushed.

  • March- September

Foundational work, conditioning, bird exposure, bird camp introduction, and skill building.  Activities are primarily around the Annapolis area with potential for short-term travel.

    September – December
Wild bird exposure and advanced field application during hunting season. Dogs gain real-world experience in appropriate habitats.  During this time, the owners are encouraged to get in the woods with their dogs and are welcome to come to experience some of the best grouse, woodcock, and other upland bird covers in the United States.

This seasonal structure allows dogs to learn in real conditions, not just controlled environments.

    • Bird dogs are not trained in isolation.

      Owners are coached in:

      • Field handling and communication

      • Understanding bird behavior and habitat

      • Gear selection and preparation

      • Timing, steadiness, and proper expectations

    • The objective is not just a trained dog, it is a capable team

    • Upland hunters serious about development over wild birds

    • First-time pointing breed owners who want to start correctly

    • Hunters seeking wild bird exposure

    • Owners committed to consistent work and realistic timelines

This is not quick-fix training. It is steady, structured progress.
